There are many different Aeoniums although only 35 species, most are native to the Canary Islands, and some found in Maderia, Morocco and East Africa. They can be tall and dark like ‘Zwartkop’ or low and flat like bright green tabliforme, contrasts continue with variegated varieties ‘Mardi Gras’ and arborem ‘Variegata’, we also see compact branching varieties like our very own ‘Nights Watch’ and the huge single heads of ‘Cyclops’, all quite attractive and unique in their own way. Most enjoy good light levels which deepens the colour of their leaves and generally need to be protected from the cold and wet in the winter. It is a good idea to grow in manageable pots that can be moved to your patio for the summer months and retrieved to a porch, conservatory or to the greenhouse for the winter.
